In Salares, in the Axarquía region of Málaga, Farfán Estudio is restoring a cluster of traditional houses to transform them into distinctive tourist accommodations. The project revives the village’s vernacular architecture—whitewashed walls and tiled roofs—and reinterprets it with a “contemporary Mediterranean-Nazarí” sensibility, in harmony with the surrounding mountain landscape. The result will be premium accommodations that combine authenticity and comfort, offering unique experiences such as guided tours and private dining featuring locally sourced cuisine.

The Challenge

To renovate a cluster of traditional houses in Salares, preserving the town’s architectural identity and adapting them for a new use as premium tourist accommodations, while maintaining a connection to the landscape and local architecture.

The Solution

The project draws on the essential elements of Salares’ vernacular architecture—such as whitewashed walls and tiled roofs—reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens inspired by the Mediterranean-Nazarí style. The result seeks to combine authenticity and comfort, while also incorporating experiences tied to the region, such as guided tours and private dining featuring locally sourced ingredients.
