At Farfán Estudio we are developing the first hotel project on the Costa del Sol to follow the principles of New Mediterranean Architecture.
Natural building will allow the eco-hotel to blend into a farm estate in Alhaurín de la Torre, which will become a benchmark for its application of sustainability criteria: neo-traditional building systems and the use of local, handcrafted materials. We will place special emphasis on making the best use of water, with rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling through a pioneering treatment and purification system. Farfán Estudio is turning it into Spain’s first benchmark eco-hotel for applying zero-kilometre natural building to tourism. The concept draws on the Nasrid almunias (irrigated estates combining kitchen gardens, orchards and living quarters, which created microclimates up to 10 °C different from their surroundings) and on the farmhouse architecture of the Guadalhorce valley: a rectangular plan facing south-east, a farmhouse shaded by a vine pergola that acts as “natural air conditioning”, and a courtyard that collects the night dew.

The Challenge
To design an eco-hotel integrated into a farm estate on the Costa del Sol: one able to respond to the Mediterranean climate through passive strategies, optimise the use of natural resources and bring the principles of New Mediterranean Architecture to the hotel sector.
The Solution
The project reinterprets the Nasrid almunias and the traditional farmhouse architecture of the Guadalhorce Valley to create a contemporary hotel model based on zero-kilometre natural building. The south-east orientation, vine-shaded spaces, courtyards and vegetation all help to create microclimates and improve comfort passively.
The proposal uses local, handcrafted materials and pays special attention to circular water management, with rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling through an advanced treatment and purification system. The aim is to make Finca La Paz a national benchmark for sustainable tourism, rooted in the landscape, building tradition and resources of the region.
