NAM ID:Málaga's first straw-bale house, featuring an experimental geothermal-evaporative system dubbed the “Málaga well.”

Still under construction, this house will be the first to be built using this system in Málaga; it will use local wood and straw bales sourced from organically grown traditional wheat from La Serranía de Ronda. It features an experimental geothermal-evaporative cooling system that we have named the “Malaga well,” constructed with ceramic conduits (atanores) crafted by an artisan potter in Vélez-Málaga. These conduits can be moistened, providing cooling thanks to the “botijo” effect created within them.

The Challenge

To build a home using a construction system based on local, low-impact materials, while also incorporating an experimental cooling system adapted to the climate of Málaga.

The Solution

The house is built using local wood and bales of wheat straw from traditional, organically grown crops in La Serranía de Ronda. For cooling, the “pozo malagueño” has been developed—an experimental geothermal-evaporative system consisting of ceramic conduits (atanores) handcrafted in Vélez-Málaga. These conduits can be moistened to generate cool air through the “botijo” effect, which uses the evaporation of water to cool the air.
